Safety and Pain Management
Your pet’s safety takes priority over all else during their surgery. Therefore, we follow very strict steps, including:
- Examining your pet before their surgery to check for problems
- Taking blood work for more in-depth evaluation (this step is required for pets over 1 year old)
- Tailoring your pet’s anesthetic and pain control to their medical history, weight, and other factors
- Monitoring your pet’s vital signs, including EKG, pulse oximetry, and blood pressure
- Using heated tables and blankets to keep your pet warm
- Doing post-op laser therapy to decrease pain and swelling and improve blood flow*
- Providing post-op pain relief medication to keep your pet comfortable and ease their recovery
*Patients having a possibly cancerous tumor removed cannot have laser therapy, since this could increase cancer cell growth.
The Benefits of Laser Surgery
Monongahela Animal Hospital offers laser surgery as an alternative to scalpel surgery. The laser evaporates tissue and destroys bacteria for greater precision and safety. It also:
- Seals nerve endings and blood vessels to reduce pain and bleeding
- Makes cancerous tumor removal safer
- Reduces soft tissue trauma, bruising, and swelling
- Allows for smaller incisions
- Enables pets to recover more quickly
